Winter flounder is a popular saltwater flatfish known for its distinctive short and deep body shape. It dwells on the ocean floor and is prized by anglers for its firm, mild-flavored flesh. Found in cold coastal waters, it is an active predator of small bottom-dwelling creatures.
Where they live
Winter flounder inhabit shallow to moderately deep coastal waters along the North American Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico, often found from 5 to 143 meters deep. They prefer sandy or muddy bottoms where they can ambush prey.
