The Southern sand flathead is an elongated predator found in inshore waters of the continental shelf. It hunts small fish and macrofauna along sandy and brackish bottoms. This species is moderately sized, reaching up to 46 cm in length and around 3.1 kg in weight.

Found in brackish and saltwater inshore continental shelf areas of the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, usually at depths from 1 to 100 meters.
