The Mango tilapia is a short, deep-bodied freshwater fish native to Africa and Asia. It thrives in sandy or muddy bottom habitats with filamentous algae and is mainly active during the day. This species forms temporary pair bonds and occasionally schools, feeding by browsing and grazing on various small aquatic plants and organic material.

Found in shallow freshwater and brackish waters in Africa and Asia, Mango tilapia prefer sandy or slightly muddy bottoms with filamentous algae, typically up to 5 meters deep and at temperatures between 9.5 and 32 °C.
