Catla is a large freshwater and brackish water fish prized for sport and food. It has a streamlined body and feeds mainly near the water surface. Juveniles eat insects and plankton while adults consume a mix of plant and animal matter.
Where they live
Found in rivers, lakes, and culture ponds across parts of Africa and Asia. Prefers shallow waters up to 5 meters deep, typically below 500 meters altitude and in temperatures above 14°C.
