The black margate is a robust, deep-bodied saltwater fish known for its nocturnal hunting habits. It often shelters near caves, ledges, or wrecks on patch reefs and rocky bottoms. This carnivore feeds on a variety of crustaceans, mollusks, small fish, and sea urchins.

Where they live

Found in saltwater regions of the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. Prefers larger patch reefs and steep rocky slopes at depths from the surface to 70 meters, often near caves, ledges, or wrecks.
